B.U.G.S
Source
I have seen this strategy used throughout each grade level at Meadows Elementary school, and it works!
Type of Strategy
This strategy is an acronym the students may use to remember the steps to answering a math problem. Every student at Meadows from Kindergarten to 5th grade uses this strategy.
Procedure
B- bracket the question
U- underline the important information
G- get rid of the garbage
S- solve
Student Thought Process
The students have a mental go to as they use this strategy because its something they remember and use frequently. As they go through the process in their minds they know what to do in order to successfully answer the question. They have to physically bracket their question, underline important information, and cross out the garbage before they are allowed to begin solving the problem.
Reflect/Extend
I use this strategy because the students catch on quickly. All you have to do is consistently use the strategy and it will become natural for the students as they grow and learn. We solve math word problems in Kindergarten and the students can tell you each of the BUGS steps to take in order to answer their question. Every grade above is using this strategy as well and it is helping the students become academically successful.
